Introducing the Alzheimer's Prevention Accelerator
Facilitating paths to market for Alzheimer's prevention interventions. A Global CEO Initiative on Alzheimer’s Disease (CEOi) workgroup.
Our work:
Alzheimer’s disease threatens to be a larger, longer, more devastating, and more costly epidemic than COVID-19. It is impacting every aspect of society.
An estimated 416 million people globally are on the Alzheimer’s disease continuum — 76% are preclinical.
The rising prevalence comes at a time when working-age populations are shrinking as a share of the global population, when national healthcare budgets needed to support aging populations are stressed, and when monetary policy mechanisms to drive productivity and economic growth are becoming exhausted.
To truly address the global burden of AD, scalable approaches including lifestyle interventions and prevention technologies are critical.
To speed the development of prevention approaches, the Alzheimer’s Prevention Accelerator has looked to other successful models of public-private collaboration that resulted in significant acceleration and impact. Among many notable efforts, Operation Warp Speed (OWS) provides a useful framework.
Beyond its role as a funder, OWS along with the ACTIV collaboration played a critical role by:
Driving consensus on primary and secondary endpoints
Aligning on similar clinical trial design and statistical analyses plans
Fostering transparency and dialog in the overall process
These components drove high confidence in the vaccine studies overall, enabled better comparative assessments of the safety and efficacy across programs, and also supported more widespread representation in the clinical trials.
Built on this model, the Global CEO Initiative on Alzheimer’s Disease (CEOi) aims to bring together leaders across government, academia, industry, patient advocacy and more to catalyze the development of Alzheimer's prevention technologies.
